I saw Ronnie Jones, the Head of Customer Service Operation AsiaPac for eBay speak the other day. His words were "hire attitude, train skills". His point being that you can teach people technical aspects of a job a lot more easily than you can change their overall disposition. It looks as though you're doing exactly the same thing, Felicity, by looking primarily at a person's passion and love for what the business is doing. You're spot on: passion DOES go a long way.

Sounds like it was a very interesting conference.

I hire employees based on their passion and love for what the business is doing, along with with the required knowledge and work experience. This is a great foundation for having happy and engaged employees. Passion goes a long way.
